Panoramic Viewpoint and Cave Houses

From this viewpoint, look for the façades and chimneys on the slopes: they reveal homes whose living spaces extend into the ground.
Panoramic Viewpoint and Cave Houses

Jesús María García, chronicler of Galera, links the growth of these neighbourhoods to the arrival of people in the mid-19th century, when droughts drove families from the southeast to seek other places to live and work. Excavating a cave offered an economical solution, although living conditions were often difficult. The museum guide describes a typical layout: a kitchen-living room with the hearth, and the bedrooms branching off from it.

Homes could be expanded to meet each family’s needs. Emigration in the 20th century left many caves empty, while their restoration has made it possible to maintain residential use and add tourist accommodation. Observe how the excavated spaces coexist with structures added on the outside. This landscape tells a story of adapting to the terrain, working and changing ways of living in Galera.
