Among cave houses, earthen landscapes and the memory of early civilisations. Discover Galera at your own pace.
A walk through Galera is a journey among Bronze Age settlements, Iberian and Roman traces, and neighbourhoods of cave houses. Its streets and landscape preserve the memory of the communities that lived here.
Castellón Alto offers a glimpse of life in an Argaric settlement. The ancient town of Tútugi, on Cerro del Real, and its necropolis reveal Galera’s Iberian and Roman past.
The medieval settlement stood on the hill now occupied by the Virgen de la Cabeza chapel. On 7 February 1570, during the Morisco revolt, the troops of Don John of Austria captured the town after a siege. The destruction and loss of population marked a profound break in its history.
Resettlement began in 1591, organising the town around the church. Neighbourhoods of cave houses expanded in the nineteenth century, while occupations and ways of life changed during the twentieth. Exploring Galera reveals all these periods within a single landscape.
