Household Wine Cellars in Galera

Beneath many houses in Galera lies another space of domestic life: the wine cellar.
Former underground cellar at Galera Museum

The museum guide links these underground structures to the new village that emerged after the repopulation at the end of the 16th century. Wine was made and stored in them for family consumption. The grapes came from the vineyards, were trodden in the jaraíz (treading vat) and pressed to extract the must. Earthenware jars held the must as it turned into wine and formed part of an installation that required care and work.

The museum preserves an old wine cellar inside its own building, allowing visitors to see this heritage without separating the architecture from its use. Think of the house as a set of connected spaces: the rooms of everyday life above, and underground, a place linked to the harvest, storage and gatherings around wine.
